Zimbabwe

At the age of four, Senator Murray was sent from England as a Fairbridge child migrant to Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) and attended a number of schools before going to University in South Africa. Thereafter, Andrew won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University.

Senator Murray’s business career began in Zimbabwe, where he also served in the armed forces. Zimbabwe at that time experienced civil war, economic sanctions and major political, social, environmental and economic problems.

At the age of thirty Senator Murray emigrated from Zimbabwe with his family. He has returned to Zimbabwe on periodic visits over the years, and retains a strong interest in that country.

Since the recent elections in Zimbabwe, as predicted by many of the commentators, the situation in Zimbabwe has deteriorated drastically. The Mugabe regime has commenced a 'cleansing' process of demolishing the shanty homes and informal businesses of Zimbabwe's city dwellers leaving more than 200 000 families homeless and destitute. It is now being reported that his attention has turned to city businesses.

Senators Murray, Ferguson and Sandy MacDonald, who were all members of the Commonwealth Government's Election Monitoring team in 2000, joined together to pass Notice of Motion No. 182 in the Senate last week in an attempt to put some international pressure on the Mugabe regime.
